Banded Demoiselle

This damselfly is one of two similar species that are often seen together at the same location. The Banded Demoiselle may be told apart from the Beautiful variety by the distinctive dark bands over its wings. In all other respects they are very similar.

Females are difficult to identify. A Banded Demoiselle is usually slightly lighter and greener where as the female Beautifuls are slightly more bronze in colour, particularly when mature.

It is fairly common on rivers and streams and may be seen from early May through to late August, emerging slightly later than the Beautiful Demoiselle.

When disturbed their flight is fluttery but they soon settle again nearby.
