The Brown Hawker

This is a late season species which appears on the wing in July and can be seen into early October.

The Brown Hawker is unmistakable as it is almost totally brown.
The species could only be confused with the much rarer Norfolk Hawker; however the flight periods differ, the Norfolk Hawker has clear wings and is very localised.

This hawker spends a large proportion of its time on the wing. It is fairly common to see several specimens to-gether swooping over meadows & glades.

When it does perch it is often in very dense low lying vegetation and locating them can be testing. Often the first sign of a Brown Hawkers presence is when it is disturbed & takes to the air.
