The Downy Emerald

This is one of the two Emerald Dragonflies found in the southern half of the UK.

It prefers still water with partially wooded banks, although some open areas of bracken or similar vegetation is advantageous.

They may be seen on the wing from mid May through to late July, this being earlier than the Brilliant Emerald, although both species can be encountered at the same site in July.

They derive their apt name from the bronze hair on their thorax.
Identification may be problematic; however the Brilliant Emerald has a brighter metallic green appearance.

This dragonfly seems to spend most of its time in flight, perching occasionally; but only for short periods.
