Emerald Damselfly

This damselfly is by far the most common and widespread of the emerald species and can be seen through out the UK.

Several very similar emerald species exist but they tend to be localised to specific parts of the country. Identifying them can be challenging without a close examination.

This damselfly can be seen on the wing from late June through to early September but they are at their best when they mature in mid July.

Fond of grassy areas, they can be observed settled on the stems, flying for only short periods. If disturbed they will settle again nearby very quickly. This species when at rest, settles with its wings open in a classic dragonfly type pose.
