Large Red Damselfly

As its name suggests this is the largest of the 2 red damselflies and by far the most widespread in the UK.

This damselfly is one of the first species to be on the wing. It emerges in mid April and can be seen right through to August in sheltered locations.

The Large Red can be seen in many varying habitats such as ponds ditches, seepages and canals.

It is distinguishable from the Small Red by its larger size, coloured body stripes & the black markings towards the tail of the abdomen. Although both red species can be seen at the same site they rarely mix in any great numbers.

The Large Red often rests with its wings slightly open.
