The White Legged Damselfly

This damselfly has a far daintier and paler appearance than other species, particularly from a distance.

It is easily identified by its white legs that hang downwards when in flight.

It can be seen on the wing from late May to early June, through to mid August; however it's best seen in July when fully mature.

It is largely confined to the south of the United Kingdom and is locally common once a suitable breeding site has been located.

They prefer rivers and streams but are becoming increasingly common on canals.

Their flight tends to be short in duration and rather fluttery in nature.
